A New Look, the Same Heritage
If you’ve followed American Optical for a while, you know one thing: we don’t change things just for the sake of it.
For nearly two centuries, AO has believed that when something is built the right way, it lasts. The same thinking that shaped our frames, lenses, and craftsmanship also shapes how we present ourselves to the world. So when we decided to update our logo, the goal wasn’t to reinvent it. It was to refine it.
The result is a new mark that looks forward while staying firmly rooted in where we came from.
Built on Nearly 200 Years of Perspective

American Optical has been part of American history since 1833. Our frames have been worn by pilots, presidents, astronauts, and everyday people who simply appreciate quality that stands the test of time.
Along the way, our logo has evolved with the eras it lived in. From early 20th-century marks to the iconic shield and typography introduced in the mid-1900s, each version reflected the moment while carrying forward the same idea: American Optical stands for craftsmanship, innovation, and trust.
Studying these marks across the decades played a major role in shaping the next step forward. Designers looked closely at archival logos from the early 1900s through the late 20th century to understand the visual language that has always defined AO.
Refining a Classic

The updated AO logo is not a departure from the past. It’s an evolution of it.
The structure of the original mark remains intact, but the proportions and weight have been carefully refined and simplified. The result is a design that feels stronger, cleaner, and easier to recognize across everything from a website header to the subtle etching on a pair of lenses.

Think of it the same way you might restore a classic car. You keep the lines that made it iconic, but you fine-tune the details so it performs beautifully in the modern world.
That’s exactly what this update does.
A Mark Built to Last
Just like our frames, the logo is designed to stand the test of time. It works just as well etched into a lens or stamped into a display box as it does on a phone screen or billboard.

Heritage, Sharpened
AO has never been about chasing trends. Our frames outlast them.
This update reflects the same philosophy. It’s a logo that honors the legacy behind American Optical while sharpening the brand for the next generation of wearers.
The same values that guided William Beecher when he started crafting spectacles in 1833 still guide us today: build things well, improve them when you can, and make them worthy of the people who wear them.
You’ll start seeing the updated logo across aoeyewear.com, on packaging, and on future releases.
A small change, perhaps.
But like any good piece of eyewear, the difference is all in the details.
